The Historic Sculptors Studio was built around 1939 by artist Gutzon Borglum and is a classified structure and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The studio houses the artists model of the sculpture as well as other models concerning the carving project. The historic residence is also a classified structure on the National Register of Historic Places.
The project scope included multi-year historic restoration to stabilize and rehabilitate the studio and residences, upgrading electrical service, and facilitating the addition of accessible public restrooms and an elevator.
Unique challenges to the project included managing the construction schedule during the park’s public access season of May through September, as well as accommodating a phased design and funding approach to achieve the project goals over multiple years.
