University of Montana – PJW Educational Building

Project Overview

The Phyllis J. Washington Education Center is a 40,000 square foot addition to the University of Montana Education Building in Missoula, MT. It consists of three floors above grade dedicated primarily to classroom, office, and study space along with 1 basement level used for storage and mechanical/electrical equipment. Centered within the facility is a three story atrium. The building uses the existing campus steam plant for heating and ground water from the Missoula aquifer for cooling. A single variable-air-volume air handling unit provides cooling and preheated ventilation air to the building. General task lighting was provided throughout the building with multiple levels of control. A back-up generator was also provided for the facility. An energy analysis report was performed on the facility and concluded that the building achieved a 44% annual cost savings over the LEED baseline building. The facility would also achieve 8 LEED points if certification was attempted.
